I buy a lot of flowers! So, naturally I have my go-to spots for the best quality and reliability. I admit, I am a stickler for quality, always have been. Old, picked over or chewed up blooms do not fly with me. I want fresh, gorgeous blooms that I can feel confident will hold up to their full potential.
Below, I'm going to give you my favorite sources over 4 categories:
Local Farmers
Local Wholesale Markets
Not-so-local, But really great Wholesale Floral Markets (that ship product directly to you)
Foliage and Plants
LOCAL FARMERS
Between May and October, I am reaching for the best and nearest flower farmer to get me the goods! Sometimes, it gets a little crazy because I am sourcing products from 4-8 different places for one event, but when it means I have loads of fresh, locally grown flowers- it is so worth it!
I am happy to announce that we have a partner in the locally grown flower space! I am working with Joshua at The Bloomsmith in Meridian on locally grown, organic + edible flowers. Joshua runs his backyard flower farm on Main St. in Meridian. This is a total passion project, selling homemade candles, cutting boards, flower photos, ornaments and more with his kiddos help. I am so excited for this upcoming season with the Bloomsmith! Check him out, and you will find me shopping this little backyard farm on a weekly basis!
Carrie is a total badass, she does it all! This Farmer- Florist has a really cool farm stand where you can pick up your CSA Floral Subscriptions, buy a sourdough starter, swag and other seasonal offerings! Carrie offers regular flower workshops, from wreath-making to dry flower panels and more. Beyond the obvious reason (her farm is just a few minutes from my studio in South Meridian/ Boise off of Cloverdale rd.), I love to buy flowers from Wild Bunch Blossoms because Carrie is so kind and she lets me totally nerd out when I come visit her farm! She is crazy knowledgeable about plants and flowers, I am constantly hitting her up for gardening advice! Whether you are a local flower lover or a local florist, you should check her out!
My friend, Lindsay with Fireweed Floral is a talented Florist + Farmer near Dry Creek Valley and the North End of Boise. She is a total ray of sunshine and one of the coolest people I know, she comes packing the biggest smile and most infectious positive energy. Fireweed offers Bespoke Events, Local Deliveries, Pop-up mobile flower cart for events and Farm Bunches. Aside from all that, she isn’t greedy about her premium locally grown blooms, she sells to other florists because she is a total team player and badass. I buy her locally grown flowers every chance I get. If you are looking to have the most rad mobile flower cart at your event, contact her here.
Ella, sporting all her gorgeous white blooms for wedding season.
Ella June is a Farmer Florist in Middelton. She grows a huge abundance of flowers and I WISH my studio was closer to her, because I’d be there all the time! Ella June offers everything from a la carte weddings, DIY buckets of blooms, flower bouquet pick-up orders to floral deliveries.
Just a small example of the varieties of dahlias that MNM Gardens offers
Nate + Midori are a Dahlia growing + tuber-selling duo with their backyard flower farm in Boise. They have a wild selection of different dahlia colors and varieties all season long. I am a regular visitor of theirs, always showing up to scope out the best dahlias I can get my hands on! If you're looking to buy dahlia tubers in the fall or spring, you should definitely check them out.
LOCAL WHOLESALE MARKETS
Sometimes the flowers I need are not grown or available locally, especially in the off season. That’s when I really lean on my Floral Wholesale Markets. These places bring in flowers from all over, all year around. Although they are not a small local business, they are a crucial piece of the puzzle, and they support local farmers whenever possible as well. Not to mention, when a last minute order rolls in- they are going to have the supplies I need and a cooler full of product to choose from, no questions asked!
I have been a long time customer of Washington Floral Service, going back to my days managing Buds + Blooms in Federal Way, Washington. I was so excited when they opened a Boise location, their customer service is unrivaled for this area and they have a gigantic floral cooler, regularly bringing in really fun seasonal flowers along with all the basics. I can call up my sales rep and send her on a wild goose chase trying to find me the best price for Peonies in December or a whole case of some specific rose variety for a special event. They have my back and do their best to provide me with fair prices and great customer service.
“DWF” for short, this floral wholesale market has been in the heart of Boise since 1999! DWF offers tons of flowers, and a huge inventory of floral supplies. I kind of can’t get in and out of there without finding something on the supply side- that “I just gotta have”. It’s like a grocery store for me, I go in for just a small list of things but I come out with a grocery cart, full!
NOT-SO-LOCAL, BUT REALLY GREAT
Now, we know that I love my local product, and my reliable flower market! But we know that I am all about some rare, interesting, funky flowers! And those can be hard to get through the regular channels. So I have a couple places that I call on when I need that extra cool shit. So I’m going to be sharing my sources here, and I expect that in return, you will reach out and let me know if you have a plug that I should know about!
Left to right: Orange Fritillaria, Sweet pea, Lady Slipper Orchid, Snake Allium
This company has been locally owned + operated (in San Francisco) since 1985! They are located in the San Francisco Flower Market and they have a revolving door of the most awesome flowers you could imagine. Seriously, follow them on IG here, they update their story with fresh, new flowers in stock on the daily! At the very least, it is a daily dose of “WOW” flower images to inspire and excite. I hit them up when I need the really good shit. Like large orange Fritillaria, sweet peas, Lady Slipper orchids and Snake Allium.
Talk about a freebie, I am releasing my secret weapon here for tropical blooms straight outta Hawaii. They are based in Keaau, on the Big Island and they employ over 50 people in their small community. I have received order after order of the most beautiful and perfect tropical florals and greens that I've ever seen.
Did you know that you can RENT plants and trees for your event? Yeah, it’s genius, I know! And boy do I have the guy to talk to about it! Bryce is the go-to guy for wholesale AND rental plants + trees! When I have large events in large spaces, I am always checking in on Bryce to see what he’s got available for rent. There is nothing like a few well placed trees to bring a space to life! Growing Wild does delivery, set up and removal of any quantity, size, or variety of plant they can get their hands on. Utilizing living plants is a total game changer and I am here for it, actually- Bryce is here for it, but I am here to tell you how great he is!
In the event (pun intended) we are asked to do large installations or hanging foliage on chandeliers- Smilax is usually a solid go-to! It’s a gorgeous green foliage that lasts beautifully out of water and doesn't wilt in the heat. There are several companies to order it from, but one of my favorites is East Texas Smilax. Although shipping anything these days costs an arm and a leg, their prices are fair and I’ve experienced their customer service first hand. Sometimes people get it wrong, but the important bit is when they take responsibility for it and make it right. The nice peeps at East Texas stand by their quality and have always made every effort to make it right when things don’t go as planned.
