Our Primary Bridal Bouquets of 2024: Let’s Talk Composition!

The most incredible florals I have ever seen in my life, whimsical + colorful, I was in disbelief! You brought to life the things I imagined and made it all so easy for me, Thank You!
Sydney M.

We had a super fun 2024 wedding season with a pretty nice variety of styles when it came to bouquets. As a florist who has been building bouquets for over 20 years, I have a general break down for how I isolate the specific desires of each client. Everyone has their own creative process, this just happens to be my process for finding a good understanding of what my clients are looking for.

Color palette aside, let’s look at some of the key attributes you may want to consider when deciding on what kind of bouquet you want:

Size: Bouquet sizes range from Mini- XL.

  • Mini- 5”- 6” in diameter
  • Small- 7” - 8” in diameter
  • Medium- 9” - 11” in diameter
  • Large- 12” - 15” in diameter
  • XL- 16”+ in diameter

Shape: Bouquet shapes are used for a general idea, not for an exact outline.

  • Round
    • Mostly rounded
    • Could be a tight sphere or an average hand-tied roundish bouquet
  • Heart
    • This will have a slight heart-shape quality to it. Being slightly lower in the middle, coming up on both sides
  • Asymmetrical
    • This is a shape of your own making, it's typically not perfectly balanced, and takes on more of an architectural look
  • Vertical
    • Generally taller than it is wide, this shape would likely fit into a vertical rectangle
  • Wide
    • Generally oval shape, wider than it is deep

Composition:

  • Wildflower
    • Fewer focal flowers
    • Smaller Blooms
    • Often with single stems that have multiple smaller blooms
    • Generally more texture and variation in types of blooms
    • Has a wild, hand- picked feel
  • Artistic
    • Fewer floral varieties
    • Unique shapes and lines
    • Strategic placement of each ingredient
    • Has an architectural / artistic look
  • Romantic
    • Larger Blooms
    • Soft textures (little to no sharp edges)
    • Layering of medium- large blooms
    • Minimal variation in types of blooms (mostly round blooms for example)
    • Often offers minimal foliage
    • Has a soft and romantic feel
  • Garden
    • Offers garden type flowers, generally. (Not going to see tropical or exotic blooms in these bouquets very often)
    • Variety of bloom sizes and shapes
    • Often, foliage is showcased more frequently

Texture: Texture is used for visual interest, depth and gives a dynamic look. Examples: smooth, fuzzy, rough, prickly, shiny, soft, papery, bouncy etc

  • Soft
    • Rounded petals with soft, “fluffy” look
    • No sharp points or edges
    • Think about a cloud- they can take on many shapes and sizes but one cloud will generally have the same texture throughout
  • Average
    • This is the average bear, a mild mix of textures, what you might find in most bouquets
    • Some soft and fluffy looking items, some crisp edges, maybe a sprig or two of something unexpected
  • High Texture
    • You will generally see many different bloom shapes, textures and heights or lengths
    • A large variety of different textures used in one design

Now, as I said before, so you don't go all pitchfork on me: This is just one way you can look at these terms and meanings. It's just a tool you can use to help you define what you like and don't like about any given bouquet and all of the attributes listed above can be mixed and matched.
